Channel 4 teen drama Skins is set for the big screen after the producers confirmed a film will be made The movie version of Skins is set to start filming in September for a release next summer.

Skins has become known for being the launching pad for young British talent, after Dev Patel went on to star in the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, and Nicholas Hoult won critical acclaim starring in last year's A Single Man.

Kaya Scodelario, who plays queen bee Effy, is the latest set for a big screen career after being cast as Cathy in Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights, apparently amid competition from the likes of Natalie Portman and Gemma Arterton.

The show changed almost its entire cast in the third season in order to retain the sixth-form as the show's setting – and will do again for the forthcoming fifth season.

However, producers say the Skins film will bring back characters from the first two series, along with new characters. A spokesperson could not confirm to NME if that meant Patel was to return.

Steve Christian, executive producer of the Skins film and distribution company CinemaNX, said: "The biggest critics of Skins are the Skins fans so it's going to be a big challenge. The programme has this incredible fanbase despite all the characters changing. What we don't want to do is to make a 90-minute episode of Skins. It would be a complete disaster".

The most recent series of Skins was the most watched to date, with more than 1.5m people tuning in, and has become something of a guilty pleasure for older viewers as well.

"Look, I'm a middle-aged bloke with two kids, I should hate Skins but I absolutely love it," said Christian. "And then I talk to my mates, people not in the film industry, and it's the same thing – they watch it and they love it and it's all down to the quality of the production."

The script will be written by regular Skins writer Jack Thorne, working with creator Bryan Elsley. Charles Martin, a regular Skins director, is set to helm the project.

Looks like the Skins film is GO. Full details in the press release below. Who do you want to see on the big screen?

*****************************************************

COMPANY PICTURES, STORMDOG FILMS, FILM4 AND CINEMANX DEVELOPING MOVIE OF CULT E4 SERIES, SKINS

Producers Company Pictures and Stormdog Films, feature film financiers and distributors CinemaNX, and Film4 have today announced that they are jointly developing a feature film version of the E4 hit television series, SKINS.

Scripted by SKINS writer Jack Thorne, working closely with SKINS creator Bryan Elsley, the film is scheduled to go into production later this year, and follows four hugely successful seasons on E4. The latest of these has just finished its run, with the highest ratings of any series so far.

Director of Company, Charlie Pattinson, believes that bringing a film version to the big screen is the obvious next step for SKINS – “given the huge amount of support from the ever expanding fan base of the series, we feel that we can go much further and produce yet another unique SKINS experience”, remarked Pattinson.

A number of familiar characters from the four series are expected to feature in the film, which will be directed by long time SKINS director Charles Martin and produced by long time SKINS producer Chris Clough. Shooting in Bristol and the Isle of Man later this year, the film is scheduled for a summer 2011 release.

Company Pictures have a long history of working with both Film4 and CinemaNX individually but this project will be the first collaboration between all three parties.

“The sheer depth in quality that SKINS has delivered over the years makes it perfect for the big screen and we are delighted to be back in business with Company,” said chairman of CinemaNX, Steve Christian.

Tessa Ross, Controller of Film4 and Channel 4 Drama, said: "It is very exciting to be migrating across from E4 to Film4, this extraordinarily talented team from SKINS, who have successfully grown such a wonderfully loyal audience over the course of the last four series.

CITAZIONE
At this stage there has been no confirmation that Skins The Movie will actually be made so until that happens we would be unable to say whether Kaya was to be involved in the project or not. At the moment she is very much concentrating on filming Wuthering Heights."

- Sceneggiatori: Jack Thorne e Bryan Elsley;
- Generazioni: possibilmente tutte e 3 saranno presenti;
- Le riprese: si è detto che sarebbero iniziate questo mese;
- Rilascio della pellicola: se ne parla per l'estate del 2011;
- Attori confermati: Dev Patel, Nicholas Hoult e Kaya Scodelario.
Meglio continuare come prima.
